I've tried to get into star trek many times, but I always got bored.
Finally I tried watching ds9 and it has really grabbed me.
I think it's because the setting has an actual history and the more characters we have the more we piece together how the occupation went and what role our characters had in it.
Odo and quark are fun as fuck too.
Plus the episode with the guy yelling about how great the bajoran genocide was.

LD has elements of parody, in that it deconstructs and pokes fun at certain Trek tropes, but at the end of the day it has its own story to tell.
Remove all references to Star Trek and you still have a story about four ensigns about a starship, their troubles and ambitions. That wouldn’t be the case with parody because a parody cannot stand on its own without source material.
