It's not disingenuous at all, atheism is a label for people who don't believe in god, nothing about that label requires all atheists to believe in any other thing, and I've met plenty of atheists with either no opinion or weird ass ideas about it, and nobody seriously think it came from nothing, that's a tag line for pop-science peddles like krauss and tyson. Nobody in science has an accurate understanding of the beginning of the universe because scientific theory isn't able to explain it yet, nor are they able to figure out the cause and effect (if that's even a thing outside of our universe) that kicked off the universe.
