My dad said that going to porn theatres was pretty common for people back in the day. And a bunch of people would go on dates there. But it was a lower class thing, and so the film is trying to show the class differences between Travis who is a former Marine and now a lowly taxi driver who is trying to court a high class woman who is only working for a political cause because its her latest hobby, ,not because she needs the money. Its a great scene because it shows Travis that Kar Marx was right and that class divisions are more important than other petty divisions like race. This is something we see throughout the film where Travis is hinted at being slightly racist. And so after Travis realizes that killing one corrupt political puppet controlled by the capitalists will not wash away the the capitalist system, he decides that he will kill the pimps who are keeping the proletariats down by having them focus on banging women rather than understanding class consciousness. And thus in the ending of the film where blondie comes into Travis's cab shows her inviting him to the upper class because they are now afraid of the lower class gaining class consciousness, but Travis understands that the upper class and capitalists are the garbage he wanted the rain to wash away and declines her invitation.
