This one never really hit me, maybe because I was expecting something REALLY crazy.
Green Room fucked me up though.
Yeah that shit made my gf turn off the movie lmao
My nomination is the Zodiac murder at the lake, the lack of music, lack of "film" cinematography and decent acting really got to me

I feel like Midsommar tried to do something like this with the suicide scene, but failed due to the shit acting
Well almost any knife murder scene fucks me up. There is a scene in The Village where that retard stabs Juaquin and the silence of the knife entering is fucking haunting.
Just watched it, yeah that shit hits different
A big part is playing the scene very 'dry' with no theatrics, ominous music or drama - most movies get this wrong which is why horror films are not as terrifying
These come to mind as scenes that get hyped up as being brutal, but just feel cartoonish and crass instead

I'm gonna be honest, I'm probably never gonna watch Irreversible, or any of those "dewd is so disgusting and fucked up! Gonna ruin your day".
I just don't really want to subject myself to that type of film, especially knowing most of these directors all are just these purposely shocking hacks. Serbian Film, Martyrs, Irreverisble, Salo, whatever the fuck.
mhm me likey , gotta watch this movie
He'll be fine
french film about skinning people alive, matyrs think it was called
Its definitely worth a watch, some pretty brutal scenes, Jean Luc Picard plays a Neo Nazi.
I remember seeing some teen slasher flick remake that was utterly shit but the flat, cut-free way they edited the stabbing scenes was just fucking brutal. Chopper has some good realistic scenes since the man himself served as a kind of violence advisor.
thats not the whole scene
The part where he bandages himself with tape then a towel make it so much worse.
Let me level with you here;
Irreversible is worth watching as it was very inventive and well made at the time. Serbian Film is pretty cheap and boring for anyone who had internet in the 00s, very tryhard with not much else going for it. Martyrs is contrived and ultimately boring after the initial jolt. And Salo doesn't have much to offer either and has notably terrible cinematography.
In general, film nerds and students will overpraise these films as they were not expecting them to have any depth at all - the shallow, base interpretations and underlying philosophical messages are touted as deep since the viewer conflates their emotional response to the visceral gore with a heightened intellectual impact. Or in other words, they think it's deep because it's shocking AND has some thought put into it. This only works on very naive viewers tho, and that is likely why you don't want to bother with these films.
That's a very long way of saying you don't think horror is real cinema.
You basically explained my thoughts in a much better way. Every big "shocking/gross" film I have watched has honestly left me just depressed due to the content and hasn't ever enlightened me more than any other film.
So you're one of the pseuds I'm calling out? lmao
Horror can be and is real cinema, but should be held to the same standards as any other film and is instead held to a lower standard by concious (or unconcious) bias, much like certain parts of the population
You posted it.
Can't even tell what's going on.
This movie made me feel in one scene what Taxidermia made me feel over the course of the whole movie.
Dead killing himself in Lords of Chaos.
Irreversible (the fire extinguisher)
Holy based
I never got past the rape scene in Irreversible. In olden days on Zig Forums there were occasional m'less porn threads. A couple of those links were obviously real underage rape, which is probably why linking to M'less was banned. Irreversible was emotionally worse than watching some poor muslim school girl crying to allah to save her while trying to cover her face while being gang raped. Which absolutely sucked and why I don't go near that site.
If the director was run over by a truck of peace I would applaud. It was simply an excuse to indulge in his own degenerate fantasies.
I don't think Irreversible is that good, but you're acting just like those religious mothers who thought metal was the devil's music. It's a film about violence begetting violence, shown off in a stylish way.
His intention was to display the cruelty of rape in a real way instead of a dramatized, almost romantic Hollywood way (which is how rape is often portrayed - with dramatic music and a fetishistic focus on the victim). Most regular movies do what you accuse Gaspard Noe of doing - indulging in fantasy instead of showing how harrowing it really is.
You getting hit emotionally by that scene means it's precisely doing what it should because rape IS disgusting, horrifying and emotionally devastating. It takes some emotional maturity past "this makes me feel bad so it's bad" to understand this though.
so glad that guy died irl. what a terrible actor
Is it even possible to flay someone with them surviving the procedure?
yes, shock is the "killing factor" when the procedure is done. After that it's infection
Rape isn't typically "jump out of the bushes" altercations either. So that scene being so extreme doesn't do service for the majority of other rape encounters
This is not an argument, the type of "stranger danger" rape displayed still happens and is likely under-reported due to shame and guilt on the victim's side. Maturity is earned through engaging life on a vulnerable level, crying out against everything that makes you uncomfortable will leave you weak and fragile.
