Why? It's an android, not a human being. It's like building a hyper-powerful terminator, I don't see where the logical inconsistency lies. It's true that planet-buster androids are a bit of a stretch, but even human characters like Roshi are that level in DBZ, so it only makes sense to boost the androids power-wise in order to be a threat.

Piccolo is a namekian. There's no reason why he shouldn't become just as powerful as a Saiyan considering he's also an alien, and he had to fuse with someone to attain that power.

Or just introduce the androids in Dragon Ball when Goku was a kid/teen and wasn't that powerful. Because there would be no reason for them to hold back.
As for the Trunks thing, he did come from the future so I thought it was fitting enough that he would be more powerful.
