Let's try to make an educated horror movie thread.
If you've seen hundreds of horror films from across the globe, ranging from before 1920 to 2020, you are welcome to post here and share your knowledge, recommend, criticize, etc.
If you are a newbie to the genre and are looking for recommendations, you are free to join in too.
How many films from my top 50 of the 20th century have you seen? What would you add and/or remove?
19. I like that you included Berber Sound Studio, it wasn't that great of a horror movie, but really good as a refreshing concept.
But you should absolutely eliminate Ich Seh Ich Seh from that list. I remember being hyped for that movie after seeing the trailer, but it was unironically the meanest attempt of deceiving an audience I have ever seen. They put scenes from the movie in a completely new context that has absolutely nothing to do with the movie itself. The movie was ok, but that shit was unbelievable
Christian Richardson
and why would you put der goldene handschuh on that list
Cameron Jenkins
>Shaun of the dead good movie, not horror
>Baskin
might just be me, but that movie bored me to tears
Thomas Jackson
Yeah, Berberian Sound Studio is more of a meta-horror film, but it is certainly a treat for fans of Italo Horror. The Editor 2014 is a sort of a comedy/parody take on a similar subject. I've also liked Strickland's Duke of Burgundy, but haven't seen In Fabric yet..
I'm surprised you did not like Ich Seh Ich Seh. I thought the ending was really well done, and that the authors were very careful NOT to make it incongruous with the rest of the film. Kinda similar with The Other (1972) but I still could not see it coming.
Have you seen The Lodge? Maybe you liked that one better?
Luke Price
Literally the same as this list but shittier >CONSOOOOM THE SLOBURN ITS SUPERIOR?!!!
>I'm surprised you did not like Ich Seh Ich Seh wouldn't say I didn't like it, but the experience with the trailer almost completely ruined it for me. that shit should be illegal.
>The Lodge Yeah, I liked it.
Christian Evans
Why not? It's one of the grittiest, nastiest movies in recent years but also works as a hilarious dark comedy. It also offers some nice social commentary, great murder set pieces and phenomenal recreation of the early 70 Germany.
>Shaun of the dead >good movie, not horror
It's a horror comedy. Not unlike early Raimi, Peter Jackson and Henenlotter movies.
>Baskin might just be me, but that movie bored me to tears
I thought it was great, especially the main villain! I've even had the pleasure to meet the director at the local festival. Great guy! After the film, we ended up clubbing all night long.. one of the best nights of my life
Angel Evans
>Why not i really liked the book, but in comparison the movie is almost gore porn. it also can't compete with the book in everything you just said. also didn't like that they took some young pretty boy actor and tried to make him look old and deformed
Blake Baker
Lame trolling attempt
The lists are not similar at all and I have nothing against fast paced horror. You can find some on my list too, but I limited myself to top 50 only so some had to be cut.
Post your suggestions.
Matthew Hill
Ah, OK. I haven't read the book. I might pick it up in the future.
I actually thought that the young actor did very good! The makeup just adds to the overall grotesque feeling of the film and it's not like real-life Herr Honka was any less ugly
Cool. For my money, the twist was better in Goodnight Mommy, but to each his own.
Their segment of The Field Guide to Evil (2018) is also good. Scary as fuck, but the rest of the anthology falls a bit short, unfortunately.
Brody Nelson
I dont rly get why ppl liked beyond the black rainbow, it sounds cooler than it is
Charles Adams
Thanks. I've seen Begotten quite a while ago. I've also liked Shadow of the Vampire by the same director, quite a bit.
Begotten, Eraserhead and Tetsuo are top three post 70s black and white arty horror films
Luis Price
cabin in the woods is still good tho come on
Parker Lopez
I admit that the first half of the film is better than the second one, but it gets the late 70s-early 80s sf/Cronenberg esthetics right and then ups it up to 11. In that sense, it is similar to Amer and Strange color of your body's tears which does the same for Italian Giallo.
Did you see Mandy? Maybe that one is more up your alley?
Jeremiah Brown
Your list is a parody right? It's fucking appalling. >Shaun of the Dead >Zombieland >Under the Skin >What we do in the Shadows >The Witch >The Neon Demon >Alien Covenant >Hereditary >Lighthouse Trash.
James Rivera
yeah i gotta agree, i think i was just dissapointed where the movie went as it had been building up to nothing really, for me atleast
yeah i saw mandy n i like that 1, nicolas cage 8)
Brayden Gonzalez
Eh, it's alright but nowhere near top 50 in my book. I respect it to an extent, but I'm just not a fan of that kind of approach.
I'd take a new old-school slasher like Terrifier any day over that kind of meta-horror parody
11, but there are a few on your list I still want to watch.
Jaxson Martinez
If that's what you imagine me looking like based on my list, you could not possibly be more wrong lol
Aw, c'mon. None of these are trash.
>Shaun of the Dead >Zombieland >What we do in the Shadows
I can understand someone not liking the other titles you listed but these three should appeal to anyone with a sense of humor and love for horror
Bentley Edwards
Love for horror? They don't have anything to do with horror you fucking twat. They're comedies - unfunny ones, at that, tailor made for reddit. Where’s Lynch? Haneke? Noe?
Hunter Jenkins
Yeah, Cage-Rage was put to good use here, unlike that disappointing adaptation of Color Out of Space
Cool. I might expand it to 100 these days. I'll post it again here if I do
Julian Davis
Horror is the pleb genre
Sebastian Phillips
You are jumping the gun, my friend.
Noe is my favorite new director and Irreversible Love and Climax are all 10/10 from me. BUT the last time I've included Irreversible here everyone was crying how that was not a horror film, so I've excluded it in order not to derail the thread.
I love Haneke too but he did not make any PURE horror films in the XXI century, ether. You could include Cashe and Le temps du loup but that would be pushing it a bit. And including the Funny Games remake is out of the question (the original is top tier tho). And Benny's vVideo is out too, because it's not from XXI century
As for Lynch, the only thing that could possibly go in (from XXI century) is Mulholland Drive, but I'm still not sure if it should be counted as horror (it's a masterpiece, no doubt about that)
>Love for horror? They don't have anything to do with horror you fucking twat. What are good horror comedy mashups FROM XXI century that you would put above these then?
Christopher Wilson
nice reddit spacing
Jose Martinez
Don't project your limitations to the whole genre, user
Logan Howard
My dear underage poster, I'm what you would call "a boomer". I don't even know how to use reddit, unlike you
Xavier Flores
Overrated trash imo
Jose Wood
I would not call it trash but it is a bit overrated
Noah Flores
Good call putting Kairo that high. Great movie. Some other questionable choices though. Where's the Shining, Suspiria, TCM?
Austin Martinez
The list is chronological and only from 2001 onward. If it was the all time best list, you can bet that these three would be within top 10
Brandon Diaz
It's been years but I remember that invisible force field scene and I was turned off immediately. It reminded me of most post 2000 garbage movies that relies on too much cgi for a stupid idea to begin with.
Elijah Anderson
I've seen 19 of your picks. High Tension is way too high. The twist ruined the entire movie
