WWI is notoriously one of the most complex conflicts in history, but a strong case can be made that the German Empire's assurances to the vastly weaker Austro-Hungarian Empire that they would back them up in any resulting wider war was the most likely spark that lit that powder keg

The case for laying the blame on the German Empire grows much larger if you zoom out and look at their expansionist moves against the British Empire in places like Africa and Australia - but then if you zoom out even further the German's brinkmanship policies in search of a seat at the overseas empire table seems almost fair given how much the Brits alone had gobbled up
