Sterling was drunk, but why would Cooper let someone like that be hired let alone become creative director?

it was a different time
Don was very persuasive. Had an unbelievably firm handshake.
bump
in the 60s you could walk into an office with nothing but a handshake and walk out with a career.
It's called work experience. This gotta have a degree bullshit exists primarily for pencil pushers and do nothings. Don didn't walk in and become a Creative Director. He got a job as an idea man, as an ad man. Then he made excellent stuff that made these men lots of money. He continued making excellent stuff until he was promoted to the head of making that excellent stuff. Why the fuck would a college degree matter when his output is directly tested? His usefulness to the company is easy to judge and Don's work is off the charts. Why the fuck would a degree matter? Furthermore, Don Draper, the original, likely did have a college degree. Even more, our Don served in the army which was a fine replacement until it become another welfare scam.

itt no one remembers the show
never watched it, is it any good?
I dont remember if creative was preparing for Mowhawk or AA, but when don was critiquing his teams work, he said something to the effect of:
>when I'm on a plane, I want to see the city fading away behind me
Like he's escaping from family, obligations, the past, etc. Dont know if it was meant to really be a line of any significance, but I always thought it was more than just a throwaway line. It would probably help if I could remember the circumstances of his personal life at the time, any user here know?
wtf are you guys stupid? He had a stolen identity. When he was hired he had stolen credentials like a degree and an officer veteran of the korean war.
Also Sterling was black out drunk when he hired him and Cooper doesn't really do hands on stuff unless forced upon him.
OP is a troll but the rest of you have no excuse even with the "60's was a different time" thing.
Guys, he stole LT Draper's identity. Nigga was an officer, he had a degree in engineering
He was a salesman and doing some copy for the fur store. Don had ambition and had owned a car lot previously. So when he saw roger sterling in his store he took a chance and slipped some of his work into the box with the fur. He then followed up with Roger at his office which then resulted in them going for drinks.
One thing zoomers and late millennials don’t understand about jobs is that there is still a human element to hiring. Even in a zogged corporation, if you impress your future boss enough, they can go out and make exceptions for education or work history How do you impress your boss? First impression, follow up and persistence.
Aside from what was posted, Sterling isn't likely to tell Cooper that he hired some guy he's not sure of. It would be easier for Sterling to just find some reason to fire Don, but Don did great.
He was an army engineer which wouldn't require an actual engineering degree and said he was a pool guy back home.
>Don had ambition and had owned a car lot previously.
He was probably just a salesman there.
why did this change?
it's pure kino
It was his business.
bullshit jobs became less common and people with degrees became more common
>why did this change
Demographic shifts and the overbearing infusion of extra workers into the employment pool.
liability mostly, nowadays you gotta have a background check and more stringent hiring processes, which takes time and money
technology has enabled a metric fuckton of micromanaging as well and a much more global level of competition, which drives down wages
Even back in the day you would be expected to have an education in order to work writing advertisements.
he was a decorated veteran OFFICER. In america being ex-military already gives you the right to demand a blowjob on the spot from people. He probably started out doing small stuff like Peggy and steadily outperformed/outplayed the other scrubs around him like an alpha male to get to the top in time. The series probably plays like a decade after he weaseled his way into the company, by then he already had established a reputation and nobody gave a shit about degrees anymore. Kinda like nobody gives a shit that Zuckerkike and Bill Gates are college dropouts.
We live in the worst possible period of history in which to be alive.
Dick Whitman didn't finish school. Donald Draper was an officer in the military. 100% he had a degree.
civilization will likley collapse in 20 years.
wish it was 20 min desu
What's so great about being an officer in the army?
The worst part is that it's still maybe at least 10 years out.
I don't want to be running around a post apocalyptic world as a fucking boomer. What if I have a family and shit and I'll have to take care of them instead of forming a raider group?
Did you skip this scene?
youtube.com
Pete said the same thing, and Bert's reply was essentially , " I don't give a fuck as long as they make me money."
Will you mercy kill the family before the raiders rape and kill them?
I don’t know. It’s one of the biggest flaws of the show I’ve noticed on my second watch of the series. He is shown as a competent creative guy from the start but besides from the first pitch of the pilot he never has another good one. Any other one is someone else’s idea he takes and runs with. He literally is riding on his own coattails which we are never privy to throughout the series.
