the guy is supposed to be a total fraternity chad mirroring bobby b in his youth with the same non-chalant humor and social prowess
the show always said "the people love you they deserve a good king" but it's not like that. renley is loved by his bannerman and allies because he is such a charismatic guy. "the people" don't even know him other than by name.
the gay subtext is very mild and only comes forth when loras tyrell is heartbroken and furious about renlys death, they never share an intimate scene

renly was unmarried and the tyrells smelled an opportunity. with stannis being not popular with anyone (because he's a lawful dude) he got garned in by the tyrells to seize the throne which ultimately would've worked
