But most non-english languages try to use a name that's similar to how the natives say it, unless there is some old historical baggage, like old colonial names.

Sverige is a shortening of the words "Svea Rike"(Swedish Kingdom). Whereas Sweden comes from like an German or Slavic version of the word "Svitjod". Which is an old name of the original Swedish tribal land around what is now middle Sweden(Stockholm area bassicly).
