A character was deliberately written as a retard just so they could have Ripley take charge. It was even worse in Alien 3 where basically everyone was retarded, Ripley was the perfect leader and top of that couldn't get hurt by the alien. 30 minutes into the movie and she completely got over the deaths of Higgs and Newt and is fucking with a new guy

No. She has real feminine motivation. The deleted scene from aliens has her break down from regret because she feels she failed as a mother. Being frozen all that time meant her own child had to grow up without a mother at all. That is her driving motivation to protect newt. That is a massively feminine motivation and one of the only really believable motivations for an actual female 'action hero'. "Mary sue" are author inserts without flaws and are often just gender swapped male characters with either naturally male psychological motivations or just no psychological motivations or worst of all : the desire to prove all the male 'doubters' that are shoehorned into the story wrong like captain marvel.

What I liked about the first movie is precissely that you don't guess she's going to be the hero right off the bat. She's just like anyone else until shit starts getting real. She survives because of her prudency and common sense while everybody else panics.

I'd say the character loses her punch and she's worse written as the sequels come by but I wouldn't say that makes her a Mary Sue since her survival always comes justified and with the help of others.

better question, why does she become a lieutenant in alien 3 when her rank was always that of a warrant officer in Alien & Aliens?

Newt is not a Mary Sue simply because she's barely a character and just a motivation for Ripley. Her extreme competence was there just so she wouldn't annoy the viewers

There must be degrees of Mary Sueness I guess but I think that's just the typical Hollywood action license. I know this is a videogame example, but look at Gordon Freeman from Half Life. A scientist that outperforms special ops soldiers, knows how to use high tech weapons without blinking and kills world ending aliens.

I think a Mary Sue is more of a hero with unjustified perfection that never does wrong. Like Princess Shuri or Aria Stark for example (yeah, I know she has very tough training but she beats Brienne with a tiny sword... There's a limit to fantasy that I'm willing to believe). But it's just my opinion.
