it kind of is but at the same time it's an exploration of the samurai (of the movie). there was a lot of stuff incorrect in order to push the narrative of traditionalism, in the way the movie wanted to portray.

Algren's existence in this story has no impact on the historical events which occurred. We knew the samurai's downfall was coming, only that their culture and philosophy saved a man from his own existential self destructive nature.

but in real life the Samurai were simply mega fucking butthurt their iron grip on the lower social classes was gone with the modernisation of Japanese society. The Samurai didn't stop using firearms because of honour, they simply ran out of bullets and were under trade embargo for example.
