crypto is in a catch-22. BTC is pretty terrible by crypto standards, but it has first-mover advantage and network effects keeping it #1 by a massive margin. It acts as a black hole taking money and energy away from other projects and therefore halts the development and adoption of crypto in general
On the other hand, if there actually were a "flippening" and another crypto took its place, that would be disastrous for crypto as well, because it'd tell everyone that what they thought would be a solid store of value just became worthless, and that the same thing could happen again to the next crypto at any point, and so people would stay the hell away.

This is why I think the store-of-value thing is fundamentally flawed because nobody is going to trust an algorithm over real physical gold. I think crypto is going to be revolutionary (especially for circumventing governments), but it is not going to replace physical gold as the ultimate store of value.

What network effects? All crypto payment systems accept altcoins. Exchanges have fiat pairs on altcoins. There is no advantage for a business to use Bitcoin to access its users, there is no advantage or added convenience for prospective crypto users interacting with Bitcoin vs something else.

For a prospective Facebook competitor, there is the massive obstacle of being undesirable due to your friends not being on Facebook. The lack of adoption limits its usefulness. There are no such obstacles in the way of Bitcoin competitors.

Bitcoin has only one actual advantage: everyone has heard of Bitcoin. As soon as another coin becomes better known and more talked about, as soon as Bitcoin loses its mythology as the stable king of crypto market caps, it's over, the idea of Bitcoin as a viable store of value will die and its price will collapse in a panicked freefall.
