Pay whatever it takes for a good lawyer. Sell your car/house/use credit cards/whatever. I was facing like 5-10 years for home invasion, uttering threats, destruction of property (mischief over $5000 is what it's called here), weapons charges, and to top it off when I was initially arrested I had a bunch of weed, blow and mdma in a backpack in my car.
Paid like $20k for the best defense lawyer in my city (it's a small flyover city, but this dude was an animal). He got all my charges dropped 1 by 1, and even got the cops who arrested me to have to retake their training for an improper search and seizure on my backpack (which meant all the drug charges were thrown out). I just had to write a written apology and pay for the damages I caused (those guys robbed me, so I went back to their house with a buddy and a .12, beat the shit out of 4 of them and destroyed their entire house, was worth it).
But ya, I was looking at pretty serious charges, and if I had a shitty lawyer I'd 100% be in jail right now. This guy totally dismantled every part of their case, and even though I was totally guilty just made the crown prosecutor, cops/detectives involved, all the witnesses and victims look totally inept and incompetent.
