I think the idea of Ghost is that you don't need a big centralized exchange like coinbase to get it. McAfee himself is worried, that his favorite coin Monero is going to get unlisted by all major exchanges, because it is mainly used by the black markets. So he wants to create an alternative that can never be stopped by anybody. We will see how exactly this will work with the WP, but it will probably somehow involve ESH.
As a side question, do these DEXes even need a website to work or could I potentially interact with the smart contracts myself with a desktop application. And is this different for Switch based stuff and others like Idex? I think at least Idex is basically closed of and proprietary, no?

Depends on how you look at it. To me the only coins that have a real life use case are privacy coins for the black markets. Currently this is basically Monero, since all the others didn't pick up enough steam so far. I think McAfee is clearly aware that it has to be easy for the normies to acquire Ghost.
If you look on what Switch already does. The "easy" way for normies to get Ghost could be to just buy some Amazon gift cards and then swap them for Ghost. This would be even easier to get it from one of those super annoying and complicated exchanges. Hell I would probably do it like that in the future.
