You have a node, you maintain that node by proving that you're a human by validating, you validate by solving AI-hard puzzles. Once you get validated you can start contributing to the network. With your crypto-identity you can prove your humanness online. Every node = one human. Some folks maintain 2 or nodes but it's pretty difficult.
