Numbers are arbitrary, but it has that "oh shit" impact on people's brains. Thus it's the point where people start to sweat and sell their bags. And then this causes a self-perpetuating cycle, because everyone realizes that everyone else feels this way about the magic 10k "barrier" and everyone sells their bags at or just below 10k because they think it's never going past that mark, which in turn leads to it never getting past that mark.
