How is College a scam?

How is college a scam? Why do NEETs say this shit on Zig Forums? I've literally never met anyone IRL with a good job or who started a business or anything else that has said that college was a scam, it's only like Trades companies that want people to do more trades to depress tradesmen wages and literal NEETs online.

>You'll incur hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt!
I live in Canada and with scholarships, grants and things like workstudy or co-op you can easily graduate debt-free or close to it, in many cases. In some cases people even graduate with significant

>Everyone has a degree these days, therefore it'll be okay if you don't (somehow)!
Almost 50% of Canadian adults have a degree of some sort... Sure that won't make you stand out to have one from an average school, with an average GPA but NOT having one surely will make you stand out in a negative way? - As a retard?

Further there's so many opportunities for networking with profs, alumni and classmates that you don't get by "watching youtube videos at home". Do you honestly think you'll be rubbing elbows with people who will start businesses or can help you get a job?

Everyone always bitches about HR departments being the gatekeepers of jobs... How are you going to get past them without a degree? Do you really think you can put down "I watched a bunch of youtube videos and read some torrented books, please hire me I'll show you i can work just as well as people with an education!". That simply will not happen.

>Bro just be a programmer and show them your portfolio!
No one will even look at that shit, they'll want you to have an actual educational background in data structures and algorithms and shit otherwise best case scenario you'll be a "pajeet codemonkey" designing wordpress sites for minimum wage.

Also good luck "self studying" in anything outside of programming, no one will ever hire you in financial services, scientific fields, engineering, law, medicine, basically anything besides programming without an ACTUAL 4-YEAR DEGREE FROM AN ACCREDITED INSTITUTION.

>BRO JUST BUY SHITCOINS OR INVEST IN STOCKS WHY WORK? IT'LL MOON 50000X JUST BUY SHITCOINOFTHEMONTH

Firstly that's most likely a scam and second uhmmm because I need money to invest? What will give you better results, making lots of income from your GOOD job and investing that money from each paycheck (to the tune of thousands of dollars a month), or investing your $50 a month allowance from your parents? To get out of wageslavery by investing you'll need some money, which you'll earn by working.

It's a scam you have to buy into because everyone's bought into it

Yes, I'm 200k in debt for a psych degree because
I was told a college degree is needed for success.
Now I'm completely fucked working a 20k/year
job for the unforeseeable future.

I actually made money off college. Just dont be a brainlet and learn how to play the system

Why does Zig Forums only ever use the extreme examples of paying $50k a year tuition for psych undergrad? Are there no other degrees or cheaper options available?

Are you guys all going to fucking Yale or Harvard and paying out of pocket with 0 scholarships, grants or parental help???

Seems like a massive strawman.

I understand your point, user. the example of the psych grad is so overused it hurts.

Kill yourself kike

and also, someone could be an autodidact and not get into college, but the chances of succeeding is way too risky. and like you said, I am a canadian and it is way less of a scam here. maybe in the U.S it is the greatest scam when you think about it having 200 000 dollars in debt for a 60 000 dollar job, and that's if you succeeded. those 200 000 dollars couldve been invested in something way more good. skills could be practiced at whatever community college. U.S if fucked in these things.

Did you honestly feel like, ignoring the social status and career perks, your education was worth what you paid for? If you did then it wasn’t a scam and if it didn’t you were absolutely scammed. The fact the universities have enough pull to make attendance virtually compulsory for access to the higher social strata does NOT in any way make it less of a scam. If suddenly America was controlled by Scientologists and becoming a Scientologist was expedient for your career does not mean that you aren’t being fleeced like sheep. So in other words you SHOULD go to college but it IS a scam and they should all be shut down.

I'm 18 and I'm probably going to drop out, school is for nerds

so long as you don't get a meme degree, uni graduates make more than non uni graduates

I just watched an interview with Ray Dalio where he says college is overemphasized.

College is a scam because 99% of what you "learn" will never be used. It's overpriced bullshit. Most jobs dont actually NEED you to have a degree. Its just a dumbass way of screening people out.

THAT SAID, this system FORCES you to participate in a scam. Corrupt really. It's like saying I open a business and FORCE you to buy my products that are overpriced and if not, I kill you. That's basically college.

just don’t pursue a meme degree and expect to get paid well (if you accept that you will be paid mediocrely but want to pursue it because you enjoy it, go for it but acknowledge the reality of it). have a plan for yourself from the beginning, but be flexible in case your decisions change or bumps in the road appear. i assume most anons here are just idiots who couldn’t get into school, can’t afford school, or were too lazy. i say this because all people i went to undergrad with are living good lives and financially secure, with little to no debt or on track to pay off said debt. scholarships are not difficult to get, and this is coming from a white male.

Go. Just do the first 2 years at a CC.

>Everyone always bitches about HR departments being the gatekeepers of jobs... How are you going to get past them without a degree?
This is why there's bitching. When you're in high school you are not told realistically what college is - a box to be ticked. You're told it's a golden ticket but at worst it's a very expensive extra line on your CV and choosing how to spent a buttload of money and years of your life based on a half-truth is a scam.

Another contributing factor is that if you're a NEET or NEET-adjacent subnormie you are not going to be able to make use of connections, exploit opportunities, make your way and you're probably too autistic to doubt the optimism about college and realise that it's the stuff that it allows you to do while you're there not the course itself that is the real shit you need to get into.

College isn't a scam, it's a decent product, but it's mis-sold

my sister has a stem degree. Her friend has a meme degree. Meme degree chick is getting paid more with a comfy union job.

>decent product
Lmfao no. Read Ive literally gotten more out of chegg than lectures. It is shit. You go for the credentials. Nothing more.

well that’s good for your friend and sorry about that for your sister, but an outlier doesn’t really prove anything.

also, to your points above, although true, doesn’t change the benefits in our society in terms of getting a degree. yes, it is essentially just a ticket saying “hey, i finished all this coursework and i was able to critically think and understand the concepts taught in my curriculum” and most jobs could be performed without any knowledge from those courses, but it’s how we gauge and sift through applicants from the beginning. it’s part of the way it works. if you want to start an uprising and change the system, go for it. but until then, simply saying it’s a scam and writing it off is foolish (not saying you’re telling him to write it off, i just mean in general)

Its just loser cope. The same way they act like working makes you a slave. Its all cope to trick their fragile little ego into thinking they are somehow better off being a worthless piece of shit

Its a scam in the sense that its purposefully overpriced and nickle-and-dimed. You could cut out half of the "college experience" and just leave the lessons related to your major, the university infrastructure, and the networking, and you would cut out half the cost by doing that. But you aren't allowed to do that. If you want to go to college you're forced to pay for the gender studies classes, forced to pay for the branches of the unviersity that you will never benefit from, etc. The core of college is not a scam but everything else that comes with it is.

t. Veterinarian who had to spend 8 years and $500,000 on college and I'm still furious about the unnecessary hoops I was forced to jump through

It's a racket, not a scam. It's bloated and overpriced for what you get, but it's a requirement for many upper level positions. Humanities degrees, however are a scam unless you are committed to a life in academia and can claw to the upper crust of your field.

Because even if you get a full ride, you're wasting 4 years of your life on worthless bullshit. Time is more valuable than money.

Wagie cope

It isn't positive ROI anymore. You're risking a lifetime of debt that you can't file bankruptcy to get rid of for something that might actually net profit 20% of the time tops.

>but an outlier doesn’t really prove anything.
youre missing the point. Sure, certain majors pay more, but the point im making is it's not necessary for a well paying job.

It's about min-maxing. Whats the point of making 1.5x as more if you want to kys the whole time?

> doesn’t change the benefits in our society in terms of getting a degree.
When did I say it did? I just called it a scam because it is. Thats why I said its a "necessary scam you are forced to participate in". Never said otherwise.
>yes, it is essentially just a ticket saying “hey, i finished all this coursework and i was able to critically think and understand the concepts taught in my curriculum” and most jobs could be performed without any knowledge from those courses, but it’s how we gauge and sift through applicants from the beginning. it’s part of the way it works. if you want to start an uprising and change the system, go for it. but until then, simply saying it’s a scam and writing it off is foolish (not saying you’re telling him to write it off, i just mean in general)
Lol dude, youre not reading. It IS a scam because all of what is in a class is irrelevant or could have been been found online for 1% of the price. How is that NOT a scam?

You arent reading what im saying because youre getting offended over my critique. I never said to write it off or even implied it. Again, its why I call it a "necessary scam".

>No one will even look at that shit, they'll want you to have an actual educational background in data structures and algorithms and shit otherwise best case scenario you'll be a "pajeet codemonkey" designing wordpress sites for minimum wage.

only someone who doesn't work in software would believe this. many of the best software engineers don't have degrees.

It's a scam.

t. MAcc, making 75k

>was able to critically think and understand the concepts taught in my curriculum
Not for fluff majors. They are basically highschool 2.0. No critical thinking. Dont try to make college seem useful when most of the time, its not.
IQ tests would be better.

what percent? It is undeniable employers prefer degrees over people that self study.

This. A meme liberal arts degree will get you a job, but it won't actually teach you anything of value.

THIS
It's overpriced bullshit and a dumbass way to screen people out.
