I think the problem is overpopulation, that our society can only support a certain population size before it all goes to shit. In the past 60-70 years the population, in USA, doubled. But the amount of good high paying jobs did not double, one manager can manage twice as many people, one factory worker, with machines, can make twice as much stuff, etc. Instead of good high paying jobs growing at the same rate as population you just get low pay shit work growing with population, delivery drivers, cashiers.

What's the solution? Allow the economy to shrink?

Nobody wakes up from this nightmare until we all aclnowledge this collectively and put countermeasures in place to effectively constrain this law of hyperaccumulation. Whatever form that takes - there are probably multiple valid solutions. But the status quo where we let rich people take over all the levers of government and power to further enrich themselves in perpetuity sure as fuck isn't one of them.
