in my opinion, the best way to live in a city like nyc or sf is to live in a very residential neighborhood not this tower shit. Obviously renting or buying a house is expensive, like a victorian in any sf neighborhood.
One thing you can do and I hope more Zig Forumslets do if they want/need to live in sf is to forget downtown apartments. Look at the asian and russian neighborhoods out by the ocean, much cheaper, not near the bars but fuck that shit. You get a massive park, the ocean, law-abiding neighbors and the perks of living in a rich city (museums, galas, rich people to socialize with and not worry about wondering if they want to be friends for your money).
tldr: in sf buy or rent a house in the richmond or sunset (assuming you can’t afford sea cliff). Only come if you’re a Zig Forumslet. So many asian girls if that’s your thing.

Maybe it's nice on the upper floors there but the moment you get down to street level it's homeless people and road salt splashed all around most of the year. Train system that sucks and buses for when the train is broken (which is often). You could drive but that's not fun in the downtown core.
