So right now a in a lot of places the DMVs are closed or severely delayed, meaning you can't get a license plate for a car you buy from a private seller, or do any of the other in-person DMV shit. That means if you want to buy from a private seller you're either going to have your car sit for weeks while you wait for an appointment or you drive your car without a plate/illegally. Is this going to murder the private seller market? Are people just going to not fuck with it until DMVs open back up? I've seen cars at good prices sit unsold for weeks
Private Seller Used Car Market is Fucked
bump
no one? Feels like a major disincentive to buy a used car, which is one of the biggest purchases anyone could make right now
Op I wouldn't worry about it too much, worst case drive with a copy of the title and bill of sale. Unfortunately driving with no tag or insurance may increase likelihood of pullover but I'm sure any cop who pulls you over will be reasonable when you tell them the situation
I mean, insurance is still even possible but driving around without a tag feels pretty risky. I know it's up to the discretion of the police officer and the courts but it might take months for it to get straightened out
Not sure about your states but here in Illinois, cops have been directed to not pull people over for expired tags until 3 months after our DMVs (Secretary of State Offices) open.
I'm in NC and at least in our state you have to return your license plates after selling a car, so the car wouldn't have plates at least until the DMV could schedule an appointment
OP I’m selling my car, you wanna buy?
Yeah I'll trade you a big jar of cheese puffs
>discretion of the police officer
lmao here they're all too busy enforcing social distancing to care, I hear street racers every night
True but I've also just had several casually roll up behind me while driving around midday over the last couple weeks. Would be hard to conceal having no plate if they did that
Markets for used cars about to get a lot cheaper. Fed stimulus is preventing repos but it's not gonna last forever
I feel like given the times, they'd probably let it slide if the owner of said vehicle had a title and bill of sale on hand, like a previous user said.
>be me
>lots of unexpected shit happens in life, can't learn how to drive until im 19
>now 19
>tired of not having my shitbox to fuck tight latina teens inside
>borrows car from someone in my family
>go to parking lot
>pretty much teach myself how to drive over the course of a 1-2 weeks with youtube tutorials and online course
>finally gonna make it
>chink flu hits the country
>DMV closed
>have to wait a whole fucking month to get a permit
>get permit
>"yeah we are not doing any driving tests mate, try in a couple of months"
>driving completely illegally
>0 fucks given
you gave me no fucking choice, faggots. Not wasting 3 months of my youth thanks to some faggety chink flu. Blame the government if i rear end you and fly away.
What's the timeline prediction for that though? Wholesale buyers are going to try to jump on that shit as soon as it's available and they probably have connections
some places can, just keep looking. i bought a sprinter van from out of state and just found a mom and pop place that can get me california plates
i really don't think there will be buyers. Way more people are going to end up unemployed long term than people think. Plus dealerships are offering 0% 84 month loans now lol
Fucking get a job and apartment you useless fag.
Forget wholesale buyers, the government will start Cash For Clunkers 2: No Cheap Cars for You Boogaloo to prop up the auto industry.
>i really don't think there will be buyers
100% correct, Hertz just went bankrupt, rental car companies clearly are in no position to expand their fleets. Small businesses are dead. Who else in the private sector is going to buy loads of cars?
>can get me california plates
that doesn't sound legal?
I have seen those absurd offers. I even heard 96 months one time. Do you think the unemployment will be extended though? I've been making bank the last few weeks from it. If they cut it off I'm sure people will get super buttmad especially if places aren't even opened back up
Private car dealerships looking for super cheap cars to flip? I bet they'll snatch up at least a few
Great, more plastic bugmobiles for everyone
>driving around without a tag feels pretty risky
Take care of your warrants.
Even if you have no warrants isn't the worst case scenario that they impound your car and give you a heavy ticket?
Not sure about what state you live in, but a lot of DMV's you can do it online, in the mail, or they're giving a grace periods. Just make sure you don't have any warrants, the car isn't stolen, nothing illegal in the car, and not doing anything stupid like evading. Some states, the most they do is make you park your car and cite you. I doubt the citations would even hold up in court, that's assuming they can even get around to it with the backlog.
I'm in NC and it seems like we're woefully behind as far as technology goes. A lot of offices are closed and the ones that are open are taking appointments, which are backlogged for weeks. I don't think they've updated the license plate and registration process to be online yet
I would hold off, the used car market is being flooded right now, give it three months and they'll be paying people to take cars off the lot because they're shutting down
Normally I would 100% hold off but I'm looking at a classic car that someone will probably buy before too long. Even then, I'm getting so much money from unemployment that I can probably afford another car if prices collapse
flip to who? nobody has a job, all levels of government as fiscally fucked, and all the smug techfags working from home can get replace by pajeets even more easily than before
used cars will be dirt cheap but odds everyone you know will be dirt broke
Seems like a good time to find a deal.
Will people really be broke if unemployment payments continue?? I doubt either side wants the political fallout associated with cutting off the cash cow
how long do you think unemployment can continue? who do you think is paying for it and how long do you think they can stay solvent
The last week of July on paper but in reality I think it will get extended and benefits will continue as long as they let the money printer churn. Tons of businesses are either going to be closed until the fall or indefinitely, those people are going to have to receive unemployment unless every politician wants to lose their job
>last week of July on paper
That's the extra $600/week, courtesy of the federal government. Unemployment insurance is normally administered by the states, which unlike the feds cannot print money forever to pay their bills. So the checks won't end, but they'll shrink by at least half.
