Look up the "Century of Humiliation", the Chinese basically took a period when they were too weak to defend themselves from Western powers, Russia and Japan before Mao took over as justification for the things they do. To them they were robbed of 100 years of progress and worship the authoritarian ideas that, in their mind, made them what they are today.
