Two rules of car buying:

(1) If a car dealership isn't making at least $1k on a sale, they ain't doing it. Everybody who lies and said he talked the Honda dealership into selling him a new civic for some pocket lint is full of shit. Don't overplay your hand.

(2) Go to / Email every dealership in your area and ask for the lowest no-nonsense cash price for the car you want. Say you are making a decision in a week. See who sends you the lowest quote, and follow up about no-nonsense. Ask him to SEND you the paperwork confirming this price before you even go down there. Saves you a shit ton of time and prevents all the Fargo "let me speak to my manager" bullshit stalling tactic. Its amazing how much lower they go if you do this via email / phone.

Honda Jazz is a good choice. Super reliable, and you can pick a used one up for cheap. Fuel economy is toppo. Not sure why people feel they need more. I suppose it's ego.

I though biz was supposed to give financial advise? There is literally no worst way to use your money than buying a new car from the dealer. Here are you two options:
1. Take $5000, and buy a Honda Civic with the lowest miles you can find.
2. Take $600-$1200, go to govdeals and buy the nearest available Crown Vic at auction (any that starts, runs, and has no major issues noted (starts w/ a boost is fine)).

You saying you're paying cash means that they don't want your gay ass in there. Best you can do is negotiate a deal with no retarded dealer fees, get an offer in writing and then say you're willing to pay all of it
