Investing in gold is a smart fuckin idea and one I'd recommend to anyone. If the USD or any other global currency was backed by gold I would be much less inclined to think Monero was the optimal financial option.

Even acknowledging that, cryptos are backed by the work that goes into generating them, unlike fiat. The creation of new monero requires that miners invest in expensive equipment and pay their power bills. Any time you spend monero, it exists and is possible because someone else put their value into refining it and maintaining the blockchain.

Plus, just like fiat, a large swath of people have put their faith into monero- they use it as currency, which is more than the lions share of cryptos can claim. The first powerful use case for crypto was to buy and sell prohibited items anonymously, and crypto has continued to be used for that reason, volatile market be damned, for the past decade.

As this chad noted, institutional powers are cracking down on bitcoin's privacy, and soon any DNM vendor with any sense will be switching to XMR, bringing his customers with him. This will only grow our user base and bring XMR closer to real world adoption.

Transacting with true privacy is a niche desire in 2020. It won't be in 2030.

One thing that concerns me is network security.

I know the XMR algorithm is optimized for CPU, and this is great because it allows anyone to mine it. But what is stopping a malicious entity/government from renting cloud computers and performing a 51% attack?

If you can't handle the banter then don't come into Monero threads shilling some shitcoin and telling Monero supporters to fuck off. You are jumping on Monero's clout to try to pump your bags. Your coins serve no utility and they aren't being adopted.

That is the point of the Random X CPU optimization. It makes it easy and competitive for other bodies to accumulate mining resources. Making it not worth the effort.
