McAfee never shilled PIVX. I think there was one tweet where he simply answered a question with 'Yes', but that is not shilling. Further, he was never paid by PIVX to promote it.

He couldn't fix the security flaw and ghost realised they were fucked and had already committed to put out a mainnet in less than 3 weeks with no way of resolving this issue. So they decided to fork another coin this time "particl" and announce that the first whitepaper was a fake and was only written as a "red herring" to throw off the NSA and GCHQ... They then published a new whitepaper which is copy + paste of particl and removed the masternodes feature because particl doesn't have masternodes and they didn't know how to change the code to implement masternodes within the particl ecosystem...
