Staking will most likely implemented in phases, similar to how mainnet release was still a work in progress. Most likely starting with low level very simple contracts.

chainlink would die if it was bought out by say 'google'. chainlinks entire reputation built from the bottom up has been entirely trustless and transparent, a company acquiring rights to link would no longer make it trustless and therefore the project would no longer hold the same use.

When you're developing a system for corporate partners and you transition to large scale testing incorporating their systems there are too many people involved to maintain secrecy
Remembee SmartContract used to be the private enterprise only smart contract provider
And Chainlink was the public decentralized oracle network
Now it is the group maintaining the Chainlink network
