hello, i make $140,000 in NYC as a software developer.
i am here to tell you why it is actually not that much money
basically after taxes I am left with $70,000 per year ($5800 per month)
in order to avoid riding the subway full of rabid animals or the train which is literally $500 a month, I have to rent an apartment close to the office. My share of the rent and utilities is $2500 per month. So now I'm at $3300 per month.
Accounting for food, health insurance, basic supplies like things for my teeth, hair, and skin brings this down to $2800 per month.
Now, if you were able to live life like this, with no car, no family, no girlfriend, no college debt, no mistaken purchases, no costly hobbies, and you were somehow able to work like this for 30 years, then you would have a little over $1,000,000 saved, plus compound interest or dividends or etc if you are investing the money properly every year.
Assuming that real estate prices stay flat (they wont) and you have no significant expenses when you retire (you will), 1 million USD isn't even enough to buy a particularly nice house or a particularly nice lifestyle that would be meaningful and enjoyable. Basically you would have just enough to be comfortable, sitting in your house all day with the occasional house guest at the age of 60 goddamn fucking years old (ew).
Plus, what is more likely to happen is you will blow all your money on dumb shit that your girlfriend or family want.
Long story short, if you are trying to obtain 50 mil and live an actually insane and awesome lifestyle, even being a high paid software engineer aint gonna cut it
