I thought Chainlink had conquered all of Defi but it seems that the two main platforms (Maker and Compound) are still looking down on Link. Is link some kind of inside joke in the Defi space?

its as decentralized as chainlink. instead of nodes, signed data is retrieved directly from api providers and their values are " medianized"

currently coinbase has the only active signed api and kraken/binance were demoed
since compound is now a billion dollar project I image there will be at least 5 active signed apis by 2021

So there's 1 signed data as of now. And maaaaybe 5 at some point. But ok, without being facetious I see what you mean in the end the data can only come from so many sources. I guess the add value of Chainlink is providing a ready to use network with pre built functionalities (reputation, penalties, mixickes, vrf, etc...) so you do not have to build and maintain your own and adapt it everytime you want a new functionality or when the market offers a new one
