For most people it was probably largely just the insane positive sentiment and high IQ larps but there definitely were signs that it had a legitimate use case and if it took off would be huge. Lotta lucky retards on this board though.

At the time there were no other attempts at decentralized oracles, and if you thought about it you realized that for all this smart contract hype to mean anything, you were going to need good oracles. Also, LINK had been doing smart contract stuff for a while, and had the Swift connection already. So I put $50,000 into LINK's presale. Sadly I sold it all around 60 cents.

it was as simple as that smart contracts and all these blockchain networks basically have no use case if they can't access real world data, and with chainlink having a monopoly on this functionality (and everything that this entails) it was inevitable that it'd become the one

Obviously there is some element of it being a good project. But the fact is I personally know a ton of OG whales who are also holding underwater bags of the most unbelievable trash.

There were many anons who went all-in on REQ or JNT or any number of other dumbass shit. They get liquidated and they go silent. Survivorship.

It was the only project taking on the massive structural problem of oracles, when everyone else was still fixated on muh platform TPS, and it had crypto's first peer reviewed academic whitepaper at a time when other projects were putting out absolute piece of shit whitepapers.
That was enough to know it was on another tier. Plus the SWIFT connection and the complete lack of bagholder handholding and you just got a totally different vibe from LINK than from anything else. Professional, serious, no bullshit, no hype, and long term vision.
At a time when anyone could print an ERC 20 and hype it to a 20x, what these guys were doing was the polar opposite of the entire hype sphere.
