Hitler feared trade with the industrialized countries would industrialize them, causing them to stop exporting food to Germany because they would have their own cities to feed, causing Germans to go hungry and fall into class struggle and communism. So he instituted a autarky program to cut off trade with the outside world to prevent that. However Germany didn't have the oil to fight a prolonged war and it's economy was faltering as a result of lack of trade. That led to Germany annexing territory for more resources and also conveniently uniting germnic peoples, delaying the collapse. Then Hitler invaded Poland, causing WW2. Where Hitler was starting to run out of oil from the fight with Britain going on for so long, he decided to invade the Soviet Union for it's oil, and failed.
WW2 was the first war for oil. Germany didn't have it, and the Soviet union did.
