If you do an option for Stock A at $50 when it is $20, you have to provide the shares if they are exercised at say $80. If you do not own any, you need to buy them out of pocket, otherwise if you bought them at say $20, you need to hand them over, even though they went up alot and are worth more, puts are the inverse.
