Yes and no. Threads got slower after the coronavirus stopped the western release of the movie. Then the threads died because people found the newest chapter "boring". I thought it was just people here, but nope. Even people from outside this board found it boring. I liked the chapter, though.

Re-reading the series currently and I just got done with the fourth volume. One thing I'm curious about is what is happening at the sixth and possible seventh layer enough to warrant the interest of both Wakuno and Srajo into paying a visit, he mentioned somewhere they both went down to the sixth layer for some reason. Genuinely curious what it could be and Bondrewd also confirmed Wakuno is the oldest of the White Whistles going by his line of "he's getting on in years", thus making him older than Ozen.

For me, it wasn't just one meh chapter, but too many cliffhangers with no payoff.

It's like a tale of the boy who cried wolf. Manga always does this overly dramatic shit, but then everything resolves in the most convient way with no proper payoff.

Maybe another season with a movie finale? This would end the season with a huge cliffhanger, though (most probably Faputa making a scary face).
Naming will be also crucial. If they name it season 2, there 100% will be dumbasses skipping DotDS and keep wondering about that Bondrewd guy.

That's a genuine flaw in the manga. I'm hoping Tsukushi has a general plan to justify it all, but I doubt it.

Correlating chapters to years is kinda not that useful, though, since the earlier chapters were shorter (vol.1 had 8 chapters). Someone could count the pages. 2020 looks OK so far. 2019 had that 6 months gap for whatever reason.

Volume 3 has an average 22 pages per chapter, this time not a single one went below 18 pages.
Volume 4 actually goes down to 20 pages per chapter with the longest one at 23 and the shortest ones at 16.
Then volume 5 jumps with 26 pages on average, the longest chapter having 34 and the shortest 22. So if you want to know which volume jumped the page number it was the volume that had the second half of bondrewd's arc.
Volume 6 somehow ups that with 27-28 pages on average, discounting the small extras that are the reg, mio and jiruo chapters. If we count them they lower the average down to 19-20.
Volume 7 which is the latest has an average of 31-32 pages on average, or it would have if it wasn't artificially inflated by chapter 46 which was actually a two parter of 32 and 19 pages each. which lowers the average to 26 pages per chapter.

Reg learned a bit more about his past and what he was before meeting Riko.
Rico herself was able to find a place she could be among the first to research and study, and became much more proactive and capable in the story she's the protagonist of. Overall she's growing to be a proper White Whistle, and this is represented by Prushka taking a proper shape.
Nanachi got closure with Mitty. She's no longer tied to her, and can continue delving without being held back by her or Bondrewd.
The Sixth Layer has had few physical dangers or sacrifices (unless Faputa wrecks their shit) but it's been rife with character development and setup to prepare everyone for what's to come further on. They're all growing stronger.

Speaking on a more meta level, it's foolish to expect any of them, especially Rico to be crippled to the point of being unable to continue, let alone die. The Abyss might be dangerous but I doubt any of them are on the chopping block until the final arc. IIRC Nanachi's appearance saved the manga from cancellation so it would be an absolutely braindead move to get rid of her.

In exchange for keeping her mother alive, Wazukyan will take the Princess of the Narahate as his reluctant bride, and rule over the entire Capital of the Unreturned as the Narahate King. The Kingdom will try to expand upwards, but will be stopped by Bondrewd and an army of foreign mercenaries and Orth delvers commanded by Praying Hands linked up with Bondrewd.

We'll see Leader, as well as Nat and Shiggy, called to a much lower level than normally allowed for Red Whistles, as an emergency all-hands-on-deck measure. Maruke will quickly befriend them, cause Riko and Reg must have talked about them. The Narahate will be getting BTFO by high tech and artifacts, until Faputa is unleashed upon them. Faputa will go on a brief killing-spree, until Ozen steps up and we'll have a fight between the two without much interference.

Bondrewd and Wazukyan will have a showdown, that is mostly talking more than fighting. They kind of just get each other, but despite their mutual respect, they have conflicting goals, so they can't be bros.

Reg and Riko leave Nanachi behind and go to the 7th layer together.

There is a small society of reg-like beings (e.g. Claw-bot). They were either built by, or evolved into from, a long-extinct ancient civilization of humans. The ruins of their artifact-enhanced city will exist, scattered among some violently swirling and reality-warping force "the maelstrom". The reg-like beings won't know exactly what happened, but they think that their creators (or maybe their ancestors) tried to go deeper "beyond the 7th layer" and created the maelstrom as a result. They aren't sure if this was intentional or a disastrous mistake. They aren't sure if they were successful, or just died.

Lyza will have been hanging out with the reg-like beings, trying to figure out what happened (she can't return upwards, so might as well), and giving off all kinds of subtle and unsubtle ss vibes with the claw-bots.

After some time, the Umbra Hands show up. Because of the time difference, a lot of time has passed. Mecha Nanachi is their leader. Nanachi wears Bondrewd's whistle. Bondrewd is kinda a force that gently unites and motivates them, rather than a guy with an intact ego that dominates theirs. They plan to destroy the Abyss, to stop the 2000 year cycle.

I really doubt there's going to be another opportunity. The meat of this series is the adventure, exploration, and boss fights.
Having them spend time in a village at the half-way point so that they can have a second setting-out makes sense, especially considering we didn't really get to know Orth. But it's very unlikely there'll be another settlement or encounter with a big group like this again.

I don't judge pacing when it comes to an in-progress series anyway because I'm not retarded, but I do think it's kind of unfair to treat the village as a single long arc.
It's been broken up by two very important long flashbacks, which are the real payload along with setting up key information for the major mysteries now that the story is at a point where it has to start working towards resolving rather than expanding them.

It's my least favourite part of the story by far, don't get me wrong, but this stuff is important. You can't keep escalating indefinitely: you need a lull to bring things down again after something like Bondrewd otherwise the next Bondrewd won't have an impact.
I can't wait for them to fucking MOVE ON though

They'll be doing roughly the same and more between now and the release of the sequel of the movie. I don't expect they'll announce production on the movie until mid/late 2021, which should give Tsukushi enough time to wrap up.

Plus we're only "halfway" and there's probably nothing under the 7th layer, so...

I forgot to mention that it seemed like the manga made a special point of the village being conveniently accessible without descending too far. I dunno if that's relevant but it is strange that it had that bridge halfway up. Anyway, it means the fleshbag protagonists haven't even gone as deep as the original pioneer camp yet.

To be fair, Riko could only speedrun layers 1-5 cause of the encyclopedias she reads. Since layers 6 and below are pretty much unknown she'll have to slow down. From a story standpoint, Wazukyan wanting to destroy the village so that he can explore makes it seem like we'll get a Riko Fleet soon assuming any of the villagers survive of course.

I've got a hard time thinking about which format would be right. I want movie production values, but a movie finale should be pretty conclusive which is not attainable easily unless you cram the whole arc into one movie which would be horrible. TV has other drawbacks, budget, mostly.
