Did I just get pleb filtered Zig Forums? The Disappearance was pretty great, even if it fell apart a bit in the second half, but the series itself was surprisingly lackluster. The eight episode time loop was a bit of a drag and I was expecting more substance out of it, considering that it went on for so long. Overall I'm rather underwhelmed by the whole thing. I was impressed how much the movie pulled me in though, and I can't quite put my figure on why. What does Zig Forums think of the anime? I assume the light novel is better?

Pretty much.

Yeah, you got filtered. This high school light novel harem is actually really deep which is why its fanbase was mostly 14 year old faggots back when it aired.

Watch Bunny Girl instead. Don't listen to the boomers.

I just assumed that there was a reason its name keeps coming up. Presumably it's just because of pic related. Dumb bitch doesn't even put out. Perhaps it's her absence that makes the film more enjoyable.

The production of Disappearance was notoriously chaotic, with a bunch of dissenting artiste-types warring over control of the movie. If I recall, it had something like three or four directions, and it's an absolute miracle that it didn't come out a non-cohesive mess of themes, instead of the refined ambiguity it has. So Disappearance was a miracle. The novel is fine, but the movie far and wide surpasses the original creator's reach as a writer.
What I'm trying to say is that Disappearance is an anomaly within the franchise, and it actually gives you a bit of vertigo when you go to watch or read the rest of it. The series is also fine, just like the novels, but it's nothing brilliant and honestly quite repetitive -- even outside the Endless Eight.

>Did I just get pleb filtered Zig Forums?
Yes, because you're trying to judge the series based on enjoyment
>I assume the light novel is better?
Yes and no. The LN series is definitely a masterpiece as well, but the anime adaptation added a lot onto it, it can be considered a masterpiece of its own.

I thought it was pretty fun but it didn't seem like a masterpiece or anything.

No you didn't get "pleb filtered" its ok to have a different opinion you fucking braindead faggot

It's the GOAT

>If it doesn't spoonfeed every single one of its themes it isn't deep!
Why are anime deepfags such a joke? Always wonder why deep anime are being called pretentious by normalfags, yeah, you retards NEED them to be pretentious in order to even try to understand them

Yes.

I mean, it did have some themes, and I definitely liked the focus on mundanity versus the extraordinary. The problem was that outside of the film it really just didn't bother to explore any of them. It was just, well, boring. I know it's based on a LN but damn.

>If I recall, it had something like three or four directions, and it's an absolute miracle that it didn't come out a non-cohesive mess of themes, instead of the refined ambiguity it has
That's crazy. It doesn't feel like that at a glance, although Asakura's presence felt very half-baked, like they'd planned on something else to happen. Refined ambiguity definitely seems like a good descriptor for it, since I enjoyed the meandering opening hour and a half which was more melancholic than the series itself.

>mundanity versus the extraordinary
That's only the surface
>outside of the film it really just didn't bother to explore any of them
Retard

You seem to be a connoisseur. What is your secret?

Rude. I was 21 at the time.

I don't have a secret, do you even think before posting shit? How can you say the themes are unexplored when virtually every episode have Haruhi's powers be at play in some capacity?

In what order did you watch the series?

>tfw no upload containing both the 2006 episodes and the 2009 ones with corresponding orders and sets of next episode previews
Full Haruhi experience will never be possible again. For once the next episode previews actually meant something and had a purpose, the community ruined it. youtube.com/watch?v=Pm1d84a4L8w

>In what order did you watch the series?
I went for chronological order. Artificially making a show seem more complex than it is didn't seem to have much point to it.

What's below the surface? Not baiting just genuinely curious

There's a lot of things below the surface, off the top of my head, predeterminism, nihilism/atheism and how people tend to dismiss ideas like time travel, aliens, or even gods as impossible because of science (in Haruhi these elements are shown working perfectly in a setting that doesn't contradict the laws of physics and actually makes sense, which proves Kyon's monologue at the beginning about these things being impossible wrong). The anime also deconstructs things that ironically are still a pretty big problem in the anime industry these days, such as moeshit or more importantly fanservice. These might be seen as anime exclusive, but iirc it was said Tanigawa had multiple meetings with the team and got his own ideas of things to put in the anime, and honestly considering how well done the adaptation is and how good it is at exploiting the anime medium it doesn't surprise me at all. Tanigawa is definitely up there in terms of intelligence.
It's one of these shows where you can dig into stuff for long ass periods of time and still find new stuff. It's multi-layered.

What order did you watch? If you watched in chronological order or in DVD order, you made a huge mistake. It needs to be watched in broadcast order for the plot to actually be compelling. Otherwise the story of the series is frontloaded to a couple of episodes early in season 1 and the rest is just filler. Watch it in the right order and the slice of life episodes are bizarre and give you clues as to the nature of the premise.

Also, the series becomes far more interesting once you realise that Kyon was the real God all along. Read gwern.net/The-Melancholy-of-Kyon for explanation. It's long as shit, but it makes a fairly airtight case.

In any case, the series is both over-rated and under-rated. The absolutely massive fanbase and culture that built up around it can sort of overshadow it and people will go into it expecting it to be something life-changing, which it isn't. It never tries to be though, so you can't hold that against it. It's not Shakespearean or anything but it's the absolute top-of-the-line as far as a slice-of-life fantasy series go. Once you consider how many different episode orders it can be viewed in, and the revelation mentioned above, you can't help but be impressed at how it juggles everything so easily and neatly, while still retaining such a laidback feel. It's like a neat little puzzlebox. It's not reinventing the wheel exactly but you still have to be impressed by the craftsmanship on show in the storytelling. Also the animation, both for it's time and by today's standards is top quality as far as TV anime goes.

Interesting

>movie far and wide surpasses the original creator's reach as a writer.
Not really its the same thing just with far less detail

Unlike most Kyoani stuff, Haruhi was already popular before the anime. It was also so good that Kyoani didn't have to make any changes to it.

2006 broadcast order is more of a meme since it's just a shuffle of episodes. It fucks all over the character development that happens over time (including episodes which didn't exist back in 2006) and if the movie isn't good enough a climax to you, there's always the option of committing sudoku.
Also, "hurr kyon was god all along" is just fanboyism from people who don't understand how an unreliable narrator works.

>"hurr kyon was god all along" is just fanboyism
- It was HIS unfinished homework that was causing the loop in the Endless Eight, something Haruhi didn't even know about
- It was HIM that wrote the symbols on the field at Tanabata wishing for aliens, ESPers and time travellers
- There's a random 3-year gap between the start of paranormal activity and the beginning of the SOS brigade which makes more sense when you realise the anomaly is caused by the real God time-travelling
- HE is the one who is unaffected by the altered world in Disappearance, the choice is left to him
- When they draw straws to split up and go around town, it always goes in HIS favour, not the supposed omnipotent God

This quote from the light novel pretty much sums it up.
>“This is what I think,” Koizumi continued to ramble on, “Someone granted Suzumiya-san omnipotent god-like powers, yet they did not allow her to become aware of it. If there were a God, then Suzumiya-san would be the person chosen by God. But no matter how you look at it, she’s just a normal person.”
>I didn’t have to think a lot on whether that girl’s a normal person or not. But why did Haruhi have such omnipotent power that she’s unaware of? Enough power to turn pigeon feathers white. Why? Who was behind this?
>“Well, I also don’t know; do you?"
Haruhi can alter just about anything in the world, like making cats talk or blossoms bloom or pigeons turn white, but she can't win a coin toss with Kyon. That's because, whether he realises it or not, he's more powerful than her. It's why the events in Disappearance happen on that Tanabata night. Kyon subconsciously grants her some of his power then, and Yuki travels back to steal it from her and remake the world. She can't remake Kyon though because, like with Haruhi, he outranks her. Everything makes far more sense once you accept this.

Endless eight is a meme sorry user. I expected more from the island thing. If i recall it was only like 2 episodes?

I thought the island episodes were well done and that 2 episodes was just fine, only thing I wish they changed was to go into the thing on the island haruhi created

can anyone explain this scene? was it in the source?
