Honestly, any ending would have met with backlash. For a mystery, the reasons given came out of Negi's ass and weren't convincing at all. I think he went with Yotsuba because Ichika, Nino and Miku would have triggered waifu wars and even worse backlash, while Itsuki would have enraged pretty much everyone who complains about designated winners.
