Sales are pretty fucking dire in general these days, and will only get worse. This is especially true for original anime. It wasn't the chibi mechs, more like it's hard as hell to stand out in the glut of anime--media in general.
300 BD sales according to Oricon isn't uncommon either. There's multiple series that sold around that much, or even worse. The era of relying on disc sales for profit is dead.

I thought this was great though. Lots of great fight scenes with excellent ost and memorable characters, what more do people want?

Combination of
-terrible animation and combat choreography (fights were easily the worst part of the whole show)
-terrible designs all around, bar the henshin transformations
-artifical low-resolution mastering for no reason whatsoever
-OST was released like 6 months after the show had aired
-generic highschool setting was very prominent the first 7 or so episodes, likely getting a lot of people to drop the show since it looked like some cheap highschool club SoL for 95% of its duration

I liked most of the plot. I think it did a good job keeping things interesting and foreshadowed later developments well. It's just the ending I didn't like and the message of "if you weren't born blessed then fuck you, eat shit".
