Just marketing. 100 million downloads sounds better than 50,000 players. Kind of like how I used to play this game called Flyff, that advertised millions of downloads, but the population of the MMORPG was sub 100.

Be honest, would you waste time buying singles to complete your ideal deck and driving 1 or 2 hours to a card shop every day to find players to play for only 1 or 3 hours?

Not everyday but I do that twice a week (before the chinese virus happened). But I only have to drive like 30 minutes.

Can tell you for free though, after having tried Vanguard Zero, that Yugioh DL is doing it right. You actually have to grind so hard for packs there and that's the only way to get cards. At least in DL you have a shot at pulling cards from character duels. Vanguard also gives you "booster pack voucher" as a reward. You need to get ten of that shit to open a pack. Really obnoxious.

They make like over 140billion yen from digital entertainment like Duel Links. It's the majority of Konami's profits.

It doesn't help that they've introduced Rush Duels. Funny if Konami is thinking of introducing game rewrites every 3 years rather than new mechanics now.
