It's like a love-hate relationship. Japan still holds fast to its culture, but it's forever influenced by the United States and will never be pure again.Some Japanese don't like it and push back. Otherwise embrace western values make them their own.

It's convenient for governments to push notions of 'everyone else besides us is terrible'. The propaganda that they put out has a lasting impression. We're dealing from the fallout of the World Wars and the Cold War and all these conflicts today.

Just the same as how the US is suffering from the consequences of their Cold War propaganda, with all the anti-immigrant Fox News-watching nationalists and racial supremacists, so too is Japan still dealing with the problems caused in World War II.

Think about how Japan's government still doesn't recognise the warcrimes that Fascist Japan committed. Naturally, that would be fuel to the fire of China's on-going strategy of 'fuck the world' if they did admit to the rape of Nanking etc., but it's still pretty damning to deny such things and it stops your society from being more tolerant.

There is literally nothing to be gained from admitting to them, whether they happened or not.

Except that the idea of history is learning from our mistakes and not for instance committing warcrimes like that in the future.

You're probably right though honestly.
Two cities getting completely destroyed instead of a full on invasion with massive amounts of rape and destruction across the entirety of Japan. There would be way more tension between America and Japan if they hadn't surrendered, and the Mutts wouldn't have been so keen on "helping" them rebuild after the war if they first had to suffer hundreds of thousands of casualties and a couple.
