Convinces FBI agent he is a normal teen

>Convinces FBI agent he is a normal teen
>FBI agent is ready to move onto next suspect
>L has no good reason to suspect Light at this stage
>Light kills the FBI agent making himself one of the biggest suspects in the Kira case
Why is this guy considered smart again? Would fooling the FBI agents not be considered a victory over L?

cock measure

Because the writer says he is smart. Light only wins because of supernatural trickery, wiping his memory and such.

>Light's entire goal was to become God and punish anyone who doubted his existence, defied him, or lived their lives incorrectly
>hurr durr y did he kill peepoo he didnt need to

His ego was too big. He wasn't satisfied by just beating the FBI, he wanted L to know he beat them and in a theatrical way(12 FBI dead at the same hour)

Because Light didn't just wanna get away with it, he also wanted to prove his superiority and that nobody can fuck with him.

Because the Death Note is such a perfect killing instrument that there's no way Light could've ever been caught without making the gigantic mistakes of killing the fake L on the broadcast and then killing the FBI agents.

Even if someone got a Death Note now they would never be caught despite the author insisting that electronic surveillance would catch them. You could literally just sit at home googling "who are evil people i should kill with my death note that i have" and modern full-on privacy invading dragnets wouldn't catch you because the tools governments have for finding terrorists and the like require more substantial evidence to even start narrowing down the sort of traffic they search for.

It's why the base premise for the new one shot was dumb. The nuKira's trick was really good, but he really didn't need to be so paranoid.

Killing off the FBI agent basically convinced half the task force to stop chasing after him.
It was only thanks to L's autism that he was even a suspect.

>You could literally just sit at home googling "who are evil people i should kill with my death note that i have" and modern full-on privacy invading dragnets wouldn't catch you
This.
If you wanted to do some high IQ move to avoid being killed you could just kill random famous criminals and make them publicly say "everyone should look on google about the top criminals in the world, something is gonna happen" so all people would google it out of curiosity and you could kill everyone of them without being noticed.
But again, Raito wanted people to know Kira existed and wanted to challenge the FBI and L on a cock measure contest.

HOW DO YOU EVEN GET FOUND OUT WHEN YOU'RE USING A SUPERNATURAL ITEM TO KILL PEOPLE?
Light is a fucking brainlet.

>asking this when he literally killed a guy on TV because he called him a fag

You wouldn't even need to tell anyone to do anything.

The G8 governments all capture all internet traffic but don't have the storage or computing power to filter it at all because they're fucking stupid and capture all internet traffic. It's an ancient mindset of "Okay more intel is always better"- but modern surveillance drowns agencies in so much shit they can't sort through it. Quantum computing won't fix this either because it's not a matter of computing power so much as it is software.

It's only even remotely useful when you already know your target and have strong leads on their points of contact, where they live, their connections to traceable systems (like banks), etc. You can make specific threats right here on this board which has been proven to be watched by the US government and probably 9 times out of 10 it won't even be noticed because they can only watch so much at a time.

And even when you have all that info to narrow down the sort of traffic you filter for there's still so much that it takes entire teams of people dedicated to hunting for your ass to get any useful, actionable intelligence.

The Death Note bypasses all of the stuff any intelligence agency needs to catch you. You simply just sit there googling criminals and dictators and other people you want dead and no one will ever find you. Hell, doing it on say, TOR would actually make you easier to catch because that's a much smaller network much more actively watched by the government. Even if you did all your killing in your waking hours that doesn't mean much for narrowing down your geographic region because people who work third shift exist.

He didn't know Ray was about to stop watching him.

Because Death Note writing is horrible

The way you can find out if any "smart" character is written badly is by answering the following question:

Are they written in such a way that their intelligence makes them indistinguishable from a wizard?

Johan was a well written character.

yes

He had to fuck it up or the story wouldn't have progressed

The story could have been written a bit differently to make Light's fuck ups seem less like pure plot progression.

I'm fully prepared to be called a dumbass, but what exactly is meant by badly written for a good reason? That it serves the story better for them to just know random shit?

Probably that they're smart but flawed, like how in Light's case his massive ego causes him to fuck up immensely on occasion.

Possibly, but I wouldn't call that bad writing. Generally flaws make for good storytelling.

Pretty much. If Light weren't an egomaniac bent on directly challenging the investigation team, he would just never have been caught, easily.

There are plenty of cases that go unsolved in real life, and none of them involve supernatural means of killing that leave zero physical trace of the perpetrator.

We can't even regularly catch terrorists whose MO is organizing people to blow people up in public and claiming credit for it openly.

There's no magic CIATech that'll catch the guy with the Death Note clicking through CNN or wikipedia or google to find people to make drop dead

You're not taking into account the fact that finding Kira would become THE 1st priority. Every government would be at it, not because muh justice but for infinite power and religious reasons as well.

Finding Kira by aggregating news site traffic and search engine queries would take a few years but it'd 100% happen. Government would create bait pages and stuff.

Finding Kira would become a discipline with its own sets of theories, metrics and researches, and the longer time passes, the more bits of anonymity Kira loses.

That them not being realistically intelligent makes sense given how the author wanted to portray the character

I think a better example is Johan. His smarts are basically magic: you get told that he manipulates people so well it's almost hypnosis. But it's good because he's supposed to be some sort of demonic figure. It fits.

There's too many uncertainties that come into play for a real life government dragnet to work.

L only got work done ignoring the two big blunders Light made because he just made statements and assumed they were facts.

Ah, he only kills in this time frame, so he's a student clearly- instead of just someone with a 9-5 job.
He can only kill someone with a name and a face, because I'm only attributing criminal deaths that match his MO perfectly

And the can't aggregate that much data and sift through it. That's literal petabytes of raw text info. Nevermind that if Kira became a phenomenon like it did in the manga people would be googling all the same shit Kira was. Even L-tier "I can control all media for some reason" level baits doesn't prove much besides the fact that they pay attention to the media, and the amount of data produced by that is useless even with tight timeframes. That's assuming you can even target them geographically.

You have no means of narrowing down enough intel to get a realistic group of people to run a dragnet on. Governments don't have unlimited resources. The US government could turn the whole CIA/FBI/US Marshals/etc on you and they still wouldn't have the manpower to really thoroughly investigate more than three digits worth of people. That also turns up tons of chaff info to go through.

I don't think you'd need to do literally anything specific to avoid detection other than just consume the same media everyone else does at the same rate. You could basically just throw off an entire investigation by writing "Autoerotic Asphixiation" as the cause of death for everyone you kill after a certain point.

>There's too many uncertainties that come into play for a real life government dragnet to work.
Literally just keep a list of everyone who accessed newspieces. When a criminal dies and you've had read that data beforehand, your "guilt score" increases, otherwise it decreases. Keep going at it for years and improve the statistical models you use until the group of likely suspects becomes small enough.

One criminal murder won't say anything. But as years go, only a few hundred, maybe thousand people will read up things about the majority of criminals killed by Kira.

It gets even worse if Kira forgets to randomize death times and you can link "accessed X newspiece 2 minutes before that criminal's death"

>the death note can allow you to control people before they die

Maybe I'm a retarded speed reader and am missing some aspects to this ability, but why was this so fucking downplayed and underutilized? This is a world conquering ability easily

That time window stuff doesn't work in a world where tens of millions of people access all that data in that 2 minute window across hundreds of different sources- nevermind spiders and other automated processes. Remember that no one would know the rules of the Death Note or how it even works. There's as many false inferences that you can make as real ones too from all the data you collect.

Light overestimated himself, he's good under pressure but every time he relax for a bit he fucks up somehow, being smart doesn't mean being perfect, he was a smart kid not a rocket scientist if he was perfect and did not fuck up at all he wouldn't be an entertaining character.

It's not that you're wrong about interferences/noise, but you're not taking into account that noise would mean much less over years, or even a decade.

Spiders/crawlers, thousands of random people reading the news, sure they'll protect you one time, 100 times, 1000 times, but when you're killing everyday using information that come out on public channels, it's only a matter of time before they use that against you.

Both L and Light work as characters because they are flawed, they are both geniuses but Light fucks up because he overestimates himself while L fucks up because he's gay for Light.
If there's no flaw there's no character
