The story takes place in Tsar Russia that gets plagued by demons
The main character is a descendant of the famous poet Alexander Pushkin. He works in a team for a secret section of the Ministry of Internal Affairs thT hunts down demons. He is pretty good marksman but he always wanted to be a poet, like his ancestor. The problem is he is not that talented, which bothers him a lot. He is a dandy who enjoys his live as an aristocrat but his quick temper gets him in trouble so that the tsar forbade him to participade in deadly duels. He gets along with his team mates but he often clashes with the boss of the secret section. His boss tells him that if he doesn't behave well he will get "vacation" in the Caucasus (a euphemistic term of a exile)
Over the course of the story he lerns that he doent have to step in the foots of his ancestor. He publishes a short story that makes him famous but he decides that he is a better soldier then a poet/writer
