He was hyped to be the strongest character in the series at the point and he failed to achieve anything during Marineford. He couldn't save Ace, multiple times during the war, it was Crocodile then Luffy and then Luffy again. He did zero damage to the Admirals.
I understand he was old and weaker than his prime and he was still top of the verse and was fighting against other tops of the verse in their prime but still at the end of the day he was hyped and jobbed hard.
Personally I feel like Oda is a hack for letting Akainu survive but it happened and we have to judge from this.

Whitebeard doesn't count. Oda wrote himself into a corner and had to pull massive shenanigans to get rid of a character that should have otherwise ended the series at Marineford. Anyone who says otherwise is not intelligent or reasonable enough to have a proper discussion with and should therefore be ignored.
The fact of the matter is that Whitebeard was intended to be a huge plot device that ended up becoming a bigger liability than an asset when he was made out to be the most powerful man alive. Oda needed an out so he did him very dirty, going so far as to kill him because you can't have someone around who would be able to compete with the endgame villain of the series that isn't Luffy.
