If you have shit taste then maybe. Macross is really enjoyable and fun show while Gundam 0079 is just a snorefest with terrible pacing and characters. Even old Scooby-Doo cartoons are better than it

I agree but comparing it to Gundam is retarded. They're completely different series. Unlike Gundam, Macross isn't a war story. Sure, there's a war going on in Macross but that's not the main focus. Gundam is about the war's effect on people, Macross is about relationships. As a result, Macross has more complicated characters because surviving the war is not the only thing they think about.
The movie is praised because it looks good and that's it. It butchers the story and the characters.

I've decided to give some of these old mecha a watch and so far I'd say Macross is the best. Specifically Macross > Ideon > 0079. I think the next one I'm going to watch is Votoms.

Macross has always lived in both Gundam and VOTOMs' shadow.

The reason why Macross is so highly rated though is because of how it appeals to otaku (one of the first anime that used cute girls to market to an older audience and incorporate idols as a main plot point), and how it doubled down further on otaku pandering.
Also the fact that unlike its contemporaries, Gundam or Votoms, Macross actually got brought to the Anglosphere very early.
Robotech (butchered Macross) was one of the first extremely popular anime in English-speaking countries.

This is honestly the biggest problem I think 0079 has which is a testament to the thought put into the story and characters. But what may have been more of the norm for TV in the 70s is not the norm anymore. I would imagine most people watch anime for the animation do they not? And with 0079 almost every aspect of it's animation looks like shit for 50 episodes. And people always insist "that not a single episode of 0079 is filler" but with how boring some of the monster of the week episodes are it may as well be. Most people who watched 0079 in the last decade and going forward into this one will likely be watching for it's historical context but again, what was the norm before is not the norm now. Expecting people to watch 50 episodes of the cheapest looking animation of it's time some of those episodes being a complete waste of time is a lot.

I cannot fault anybody for watching the movies and just moving on from there.

It is inferior to almost any other mecha series out there. Even Jinki: Extend is better than it
