So far he's made extremely corny pop films. He doesn't even play in the same universe as Miyazaki. Also, the ridiculous insert songs in Shinkai films are probably the worst thing ever but Japan loves this sort of stuff for some reason. It's like American west coast teen drama-tier.

On a poll some time ago they asked hundreds of established directors to make a list of the best directors alive. Miyazaki ended up in the top ten. I bet if they asked about Shinkai, most of them wouldn't know who you are talking about.

Miyazaki also started at the bottom from nothing. He taught himself to draw and worked his way up from a grunt animator to animation director. He then went to form his own studio because he didn't like how animation was treated under the studio system, just like Shinkai. They're more alike than you care to admit.
