The movie is so different from the manga that it really isn't. Going back to the source material and doing a new adaptation isn't a remake. This is the same bullshit people say about the new Kino no Tabi anime because they don't understand that just because there's already a partial adaptation of the source material doesn't mean that anything that ever touches the source again is a remake regardless of how much new content it has. Being the first adaptation doesn't mean you're the definitive version.

I read the manga just yesterday and now I understand the people who said the movie was not good.

The movie can stand on it's own well but comparing it to the manga is not fair, especially considering the manga hadn't finished yet when the movie was made! And the author DID say that without the movie in between, the manga could've probably turned out very differently!

That expains the similarities. Do you know how much of the manga was done when the movie was out? Because the movie seems like an abridged version of the manga, with a couple of tweaks here and there.

this. the manga is definitely worth reading if you liked the movie since it's almost a completely different story with more characters and events

i don't think it's a fair comparison considering how much had to be crammed into the run time, but the ONE thing that i think the movie did a better job of was establishing Tetsuo's resentment/rivalry with Kaneda. in the manga it felt like Tetsuo became a murderous traitor almost out of nowhere. we do get some glimpses into his past and the rivalry in later chapters but by then i felt like it was too late

i don't remember a rape scene in either the movie or the manga. i can remember an attempted rape in the manga that was unsuccessful, and sexual harassment in both versions. there was the pages where tetsuo rounds up the girls to have a "party" and we only see them making out at most before their heads explode

I would be interested in a full adaptation of the manga into a series, but leave the movie alone
