Isn't it hard to understand, user? A lot of people who watch or read anime/manga are basement weebs, a lot are even social anxious to interact with people in the bigger world. All are confined in their tiny space. CAuse of that, we project a lot of ourselves into anime/manga MCs esp since many works are empowering to a degree.
We root for the everyday man-type MC cause we see ourselves in them. It's not just anime/manga but also in western works as well. Whether we're aware of it or not, many just like to self-insert a piece of them in characters. Which brings me back to the original point, with waifufags, they see themselves in anime MCs. I mean, a lot of anime MCs are super shallow and simplistic in design as the norm, it's not everyday you get someone like a Kazuma or a Tomoya but they're designed to be so simple that one can feel they can be that MC and fill in the blanks. This has led to self-insertion and projecting into these MCs. Throw in waifufaggotry where waifus are concerned, you have these people hoping the waifus and the MC they've already self inserted themselves to get together. Cause they see themselves in those MCs and hope they can achieve something their real-life counterpart can't achieve (at least in their current stage, a weab can become a normie in their life after all if they tried)
