Seinen vs Shounen

I'm quite confused by this sometimes, why do people group series together based on tone alone?

You have things like Vinland Saga and Shigurui, who ran in shonen magazines for some time. A lot of people are conflicted as to whether Vinland Saga is a shounen-pandering manga or not (or at least, it feels like) and everyone's pretty much onboard with Shigurui being seinen despite running as a shounen for much longer.

Shounen/Seinen aren't perfect boxes.

The truth is those terms don't mean much of anything in regards to content but Zig Forums uses them like they do. They're just vague terms indicating target demographic. It's true you can get away with more in a seinen manga than in a shonen manga but that doesn't mean all seinen manga push the boundaries of content.

Then why do people even use those terminologies instead of just calling something a generic battle manga or whatever? What happened to actual genres?

Because they're retarded and have made up their own definitions of the terms that they expect everyone to know and want to use.

They're literally just indicators of whether or not the magazine they're published in will have (softcore or hardcore) porn in them or not. Berserk's published in a magazine where everything that isn't a manga chapter is scantily clad women.

Because Zig Forums is filled with turbobrainlets who think "seinen = good mature work" and "shounen = for kids bad".
That's why you have retards coping hard and pretending a shounen is actually a seinen because they subconsciously can't have confidence in liking a shounen unless it has the seinen label on it.
Further more on that you have even bigger retards saying something can't possibly be a shounen because "there's blood and death bro, no way that's for kids" despite the standards for kids being significantly different in Japan.
"Durr Orochimaru does Mengele-tier experiments on people and Sasuke got his arms ripped off, no way this is a shounen", this is what you sound like you fuck.

demography its a meme tho

But still, Shonen RED its a magazine for gore and high violence shonen

Sounds to me like the Naruto/Bleach/OP demographic eventually just started thinking shounen was a genre because of some similar tropes between those battle manga and then applying it to anything after.

You have similar tendencies with western stuff too. I used to have a few friends who refused to watch kids' movies with me.
The problem with putting becoming an adult on a pedestal is that people think that they need to live up to being adults, including drinking their coffee black and not watching anything that's labeled wrong.
Meanwhile, I tried coffee 15 years ago and decided that I didn't like it and wouldn't like it no matter how much sugar or milk was added to it.

The confusion is older than the big 3.

Uh, yeah they are? If it's in a seinen magazine it's seinen, and if it's a shounen magazine it's shounen. They aren't genres, it's a marketing distinction.

>The confusion is older than the big 3.
Then how old is it? It just feels like it's become more prevalent in their wake.

Everything looks more prevalent as the internet puts bigger spotlights on smaller and smaller conversations. I remember arguing about that shit in the early Eternal September of anime-centric Usenet groups. I was a stupid 14 year old at the time and a lot of the stupid discussions about the topic then feel similar to stupid discussions about the topic now, just with some different nomenclature and fewer Mexican posters.

Based. People need to accept that being a shonen doesn't make it bad and being a seinen make it good. People can't tell the difference but I'm glad you can

Honestly Shingeki no Kyojin would be considered a seinen if it was in a different magazine and had at least a single rape or just random nudity. They're very flimsy categories.

Even the elevens arent sure and regularly fuck it up. Something like a really simple battle manga is obviously meant for a shounen magazine, but then they sometimes fuck it up and put it in a seinen magazine instead, and then sometimes you get what is an obvious seinen series in a shounen magazine.

There are some magazines that are targeted at both boys and girls for example, which would make the manga inside shonen and shojo.
Other manga switch from one magazine to another.
There are plenty of cases of possible confusion.

Life is not cut and dry.

Nice headcanon.

Do it properly. I'm not going to read it otherwise.

Fucking tiring to see.

Kek, this pic always triggers so many people, it's hilarious. You'd think that after seeing this pic being posted 1000 times they'd understand that it's a joke but no, these retards keep taking it seriously.

Keep going, you deserve every (You) you can get.

Too dumb to grasp the criticism leveled against it, are ya? Saying “Nice headcanon” is a shorthand for “Definition you pulled out of your ass with no relation to reality, based entirely on cherrypicked examples which, if applied to the whole dataset, i.e. all manga, fall woefully short”.

Categorizations like Seinen and what have you have solely to do with what magazine they are published in which in turn depends on what the supposed audience is. There are SOME slight tendencies between those magazines and the manga they published but they are vague at best, especially given the breadth of different manga they include. You can autistically re- and subdefine these terms all you want but this doesn’t somehow make it any more than the solipsistic excercise in mental masturbation it inherently is.

Shounen is literally a pg-pg13 rating, seinen is r rating. Don't think of it as any deeper than that.

I know it is comforting to delude yourself into thinking that there aren’t genuine retards in this world who would post something like this unironically, user, but the bitter truth of the matter is that the world, and Zig Forums in particular, is filled with them. In fact, you already know this because you believe that this kind of retards falls for what you imagine to be bait yet despite having this as axiom you refuse to consider the implications of this, namely that sooner or later you would encounter such a retard who posted this image while genuinely identifying with its idea.

If anything it’s even more arbitrary and meaningless than that. Not all Seinen feature anything that would have them rated for adult and vice-versa. It is far more nebulous and vague than that.

What's R rated about K-ON, Hidamari Sketch, Yuru Camp, etc?

reminder that K-ON! is seinen
