Plus, this rod's probably for octopus fishing.
They stiffen it so you can pull up an octopus that's got a sucker caught on something without the rod bending.
Mackerels got soft mouths, so you use a flexible rod. Since the rod absorbs some of the shock it's harder for the fish to pull off the hook.
On the other hand, with a stiffer rod the shock isn't absorbed and the fish can jerk right off. Sometimes all you reel in's a mouth.
