You have to collect these shitty keys and then you can only call on these moderately powerful spirits every once in a while to fight for you. It's like being a worse pokemon trainer. Maybe it's just because lucy is insanely weak though

The keys aren't bad, she just refuses to abuse the good ones. Libra being able to manipulate gravity, and gemini can copy anyone as long as her magic power is higher make them very useful.But she refused the libra key, and would rather keep summoning Taurus than gemini.
And in the 100 Year Quest sequel, he takes down all 3 members of the Thunder Tribe all on his own and wins.

Mashima's very autistic about the established power levels introduced early on in the story. Because of this Laxus and Mira will always be above erza despite her doing ridiculous stuff like slicing a meteor. Gildarts will also be ranked above all of them, despite not doing anything.

Author stated it several times. Mira was rusty after FT disbanded and the only reason Erza didn't get stomped is wendy. Even after that, it's Irene that offed herself.
It's not like Ezra fought her alone, she had a lot of help from Wendy. The fact that Gray was afraid of her, despite being a demon slayer means that Mashima's willing to B.S powerlevels to keep his tier list consistent.
