They have always been this way, its just that they have gotten more comfortable in showing their true side to the others. Its all to show how much they've grown from the first episode

What their doing is developing the characters more instead of the lightning pace of the first season. This allows for the later more heartbreaking episodes to be more emotional. It also gives the feeling that this story is real, not every single day is some new step forward to your goal, it's slow, and at the beginning of they want to start taking things slower and let you, and the characters, appreciate the high school life more.
