How far was the manga story when the OVAs were being made? I can only imagine the production staff's reactions to the later stories.

It's sad how the golden boy manga turned into complete and utter NTR material.
There's an even more off the chain sequel called GOLDEN BOY II, which is straigh up about filming porn with his love interest.

Manga turns into NTR out of nowhere, goes off the deep end with eva tier philosophical ramblings and then just ends without resolving anything (after like one issue that is purely made out of the love of his life fucking some gigachad in some flashback)
And then 20 years later the author made GOLDEN BOY II which is even more cucked with his love interest straight up doing porn with ugly NTR men.

The manga was already in NTR territory when the anime happened, they decided to ignore everything past the first few manga volumes with good reason.

The manga was a lot better. I never watched the anime, but saw previews of it that had dinosaurs or some shit. The manga was just about high schools battling each other in tournaments

that how it goes, anime directors know whats up that's why they make the better versions, same thing with Ah My Goddess, no one gives a shit about the manga

what if I just want to read it for the fun and the lewds? The anime was pretty much episodic (except maybe ep. 6), and each episode was great even on its own. Assuming that the manga follows a similar structure, it can't go SO WRONG just because with one girl he goes with the NTR route, right?
Or maybe the manga relies more on an overarching plot which just has a shitty ending?

Golden Boy, like all manga by Egawa, is mostly about discussing sociopolitical/ethical topics while using some other setting as a red herring.
Golden Boy starts as the story of a super talented man but is actually all about how various people deal with sexuality and fetishes in the japanese society and how you can judge people by their fetishes (which is why Kintaro has ALL possible fetishes despite being good at everything too), Deadman starts as a story about vampires but is actually a story about immortality and how society changes through the ages for better or worse, Yapoo is a story about the reversal of gender roles and an analysis about genders and, again, sexuality, and so on for al his stuff.

Plebs get turned off by Egawa not being afraid to talk about fetishes, but all his manga (while having the same exact flaw of an unsatisfying ending) are pretty great and you'll rarely ever find something like his stuff, he's also a great artist.

No he's just not a good writer. GB just becomes an unreadable mess it's no wonder why people only talk about the anime version over the manga.

People in this place maybe, but Zig Forums's opinion on anything should be disregarded.

I've seen nobody outside Zig Forums who praised the manga or any of his works.

You should get outside of your cave more often then because Egawa's considered one of the old greats of the industry.

Aside from one book I have that includes a biography about him I haven’t heard much positive things about Egawa. Seemed like he only comes around to bitch about mangaka that are more successful than himself.

But if you do some research there is some base to his claims as GTO author also took some ideas from the Kyou kara ore wa for his shounen junai gumi series..

i am not saying everything is copied just initial premise of 2 high school delinquents taking down other gangs..

Rather the writers changed after the first few volumes. The anime covers 5 out of the first 6 manga stories(ignoring one story, while adding a story on their own), meaning if you enjoyed the anime, you would enjoy the early manga as well.
But the author then changed and started to deviant from the original premise. I.e. a perverted but good hearted and talented young man who goes around learning things while making the life of young women better, while adding a lot of comedy.

Kyoy Kara Ore Wa isn't even the first Yankee manga

The virtual reality fake outs got real old and the shit with the cult brought the tone down a lot. His art also got worse or he just got lazy which would explain why the ending is so unsatisfying
