The plot is not as fascinating as Ghibli or Oshii movies.
The visuals are worth watching.

The narrative tries too hard to make us feel empathy towards tetsuo when it is impossible for me to feel such a thing for a willingful loser and a crybaby.
Also kaneda has too much screen time for how relevant it was at the end of the day.
Ignoring these two cons, it was a very good movie and an eternal classic of the Chinese cartoon

The animation is beautiful in the movie but the ending is retarded and the story was pretentious. I need to read the manga to compare but I thought it was a THICK and SOLID 7/10 would have been higher if the narrative wasn't a disaster. I loved the sound and choreography though.

sadly this. People praise it for its scope as a product of its time (1988 was 32 years ago!), excellent visuals and music make it a classic but there's not a whole lot of depth to its plot and characters. It's more of an achievement in its existence as an audiovisual product than as a movie itself, I think.
